Astrology Valdiation

Have you looked to your Astrology sign for Validation? I have often felt curious about it, wondering what the hype was all about. I think I always wondered, because i never felt the validation from mine. But, I was still always curious.
In a conversation with a friend a few years back. I was informed that I was on the Cusp of two Astrology signs, and that was why I was not connecting to my Sign. Ok. Well that made sense, as i was at the very first day or two of my Astrology Sign. But it didnt ever help me connect with them. Just gave me an understanding on why I hadnt connected with mine. Though i could never get over how so many people fit their signs so spot on...amazingly spot on. I mean they really couldnt have nailed the description of these people any better. I began to realize that those people who were in the middle of their Astological sign, fit the description almost to a T. It was amazing, and beautiful, and helped me understand people a little bit better. I found a sense of acceptance and understanding of some people in my life. But why were those that were on the cusp, still so hard to understand. Why did some of us not fit into that category.
The other day a friend posted a pin about astrology on the cusp, of course i had to read it. Wow! Someone finally was able to address the 'on the cusp' people, and I suddenly had a new understanding of myself and a validation of YES, that is soooo me. But why did I need it? Did I really not know who I was? Honestly, it didnt matter to me at the time. I was so excited to finally see something about the 'on the cusp' people. And to see that it fit me to a T was so exciting. I've had the pleasure of seeing myself from a new perspective. I love it.
What was even more amazing was that the next day I had a long conversation with a student. He says to me, you strike me as an intellectual type. Someone who may be have went to Radke. Wow, that surprised me. I've never thought of myself as an Intellectual type. What was funny to me, was the night before I read this article and it described me as Intellectual, Creative and Spiritual. I felt the connection with Creative and Spiritual but not Intellectual. And now here was a student who was describing me as just that.  Was it coincidence? Hmmmm we'll never know. But what I do know, is that I questioned it. It made me think about myself a little bit differently. I believe we all have a sense of knowing who we are, and than there are those parts of us that we may not connect with, but may still lye dormant in ourselves. Who knows what it meant, but i connected with it, and that was something for me.
Whether or not you believe in such things, I highly recommend you read this article, maybe it will help you understand someone you know that is on the Cusp. Were you born on a Cusp?

Living the Practice

Lately I have felt the need to live my practice alot more. I have been on the Yoga path for a long time, and it has been a slow path for me. I teach, I practice, I love, and I continue to study. Its been this way for many years, always growing and growing.
But lately, its taken on a new path. A path where I find less of a need for past enjoyments, and more of a need for my Yoga practice. I find that when I am driving from one class to another,  I want to listen to Kirtan, or music that expresses Love. I feel the need for more Mantra, more meaning to the practice. I find the need to expand my teachings beyond what I already know. Its constant, and incessive. I've branched out in so many different modalities of Yoga, that I feel that I am not rigged in my teachings any longer. The funny thing, is that I never thought of myself as rigid in my teachings before, but the more I expand, the more i realized I was. Crazy, huh? Ive taken on new approaches, embraced areas of my teachings that I didnt really enjoy before.
What does all of this mean? This new growth? Well, I'm sure it means different things to different people, and I know each of us would have thier own opinion and experience of this view. But for me, I feel like I am breaking out of a shell that was keeping me sheltered, because at the time I needed that shelter. But not anymore, the shelter is no longer need and I am soaring into a new life, a life that I have been asking for, but was never ready for. I see that now. I see that I am still not ready for some of my wants, some of my dreams. But, I know that if I keep the path, if I stick to the work that it will come. Exactly when its supposed to come. Because that is the beauty of this practice. Do the work! and your dreams will come true. But what you may be surprised to find out, is when you do the work, you may find that your dreams change, and thats ok. Because in reality, you are still working towards what you want.
With this new light in my life, I feel a lot more freedom. I feel a new sense of relief from what was holding me down. Have you ever seen the movie "Eat, Pray, Love"? In the movie Julie Roberts talks about how everyone has a word that fits them, a word that describes them as a whole. They gave a word to Cities, and various other things. I believe that at times we all have a word that describes where we are. I think those words change as our lives change. My word was balance, I was always trying to find balance in my life. I found success in that, and its still a part of me. But my word now in the forefront of my life is Work. Whats your word?

What lights your fire?

Are you doing the things that make you happy? Do you not know what it is? Are you able to do the things you dont enjoy and feel good about it?

Often times we get caught up in the responsibilities of our lives. Its what we are taught to do by our parents, by society, because its the standard. But it doesnt mean we have to do it, and be unhappy about it. Its been my personal experience that if you find your purpose in life, and you live it, you become fulfilled and generally feel happier. With this feeling in our hearts we have the strength to get through the things we dont enjoy as much, and they begin to feel like a task that is no big deal.

Say for example you really do not enjoy cooking, for whatever reason. But you found your purpose in life, and that's training dogs, and making a difference in a dogs world. When you take the time to routinely train dogs, as many times a week that feels right with you, suddenly you get up in the morning and you get through the task of making your breakfast (yep, your cooking) and your smiling, your happy. You could blame it on the sun, or you woke up on the right side of the bed, or the stars are aligned. All those things could still be true, but the bigger picture is that when you are living your purpose, your are living for your passion, it fills your whole life with contentment, and suddenly the menial tasks don't even get noticed, outside of something you get done, to move to the things you really enjoy and live for.

Today I want you to take a moment and think about, what are you passionate about? What is your life's purpose? Maybe you dont know yet, and thats ok. Take today to figure out what that is. Give yourself 20minutes to go lie out in the sun, or find a quiet place in your house. Than mentally strip all the labels off your life - mom, dad, brother, sister, receptionist, friend, teacher, housewife, neighbor. Strip away all the responsibilities of what you do - caretaker, chauffer, boss, cook, volunteer. Now, imagine if that person deep inside with out the labels had no fears whatsoever. There are no limits, no fences, nothing stopping that person from being who they are. Whats left? Who is the deepest part of what you are? What does that person feel like? What does that person want to do? What does that person want to be? We all know what and who this person is. But our person has been covered up by many layers of stuff! Sometimes it takes a lot of searching, and letting go of those layers to find out who that person is again.

When you get up from your moment of checking in with your Self, observe your day. Be aware of how your day is going, but let of of any attachments to that day. Repeat this moment of checking in with your Self, and eventually you will become aware of who you really are, what is your purpose, and what lights your fire! You will find that when you live your purpose, you are happy, content, and most importantly you will feel complete in what you are doing. Nothing will seem menial. Everything we do is for that purpose. Its what we were put here for. That one, or many, things you are living for are different for everyone, and perfect for you, all at the same time. So today, go out and light your fire!

What we need vs what we want

Have you ever seen the animated movie classic by Disney called "the Princess and the Frog"? I'm sure you've heard of the tale, right? A woman kisses a frog to turn him back into a Prince. This particular movie has a great message to go along with the tale. This movie is based in New Orleans where a spoiled Prince Naveen goes to marry a rich eligible woman, Charlotte La Bouff,
because his parents cut him off from their riches, in order to teach him to grow up. In the process his gets himself tangled up with a voodoo man, who casts a spell on him, and turns him into a frog. He shows up at Charlotte's house who is having a mascarde party for Mardi Gras, and kisses who he thinks is a princess to break the spell. Turns out its a poor hard working woman named Tiana who was dressed up at the party. In the process of the kiss, Tiana gets turned into a frog. In order to break the spell they try and reach a good voodoo woman named mama Odie, deep in the bayou.

The trip to mama Odies, gives each of them a chance to get to know the other. It turns out that Prince Naveen is completely incapable of doing anything for himself, and only wants to have fun. No responsibility exists in his world. Tiana is hard working with 3 jobs and is saving up money to open a restaurant which was her daddy's dream, as well as her own. She has never taken the time to have fun.

When they arrive at mama Odie's house, she enlightens them with a lesson on knowing the difference between what they want and what they need. They of course want to be turned back to human, right? But along the way the two frogs get to know each other and mama Odie shows Prince Naveen what he really needs...LOVE...and for him that means something more than himself. Mama Odie attempts to show Tiana that life isnt all about hard work, but that you need balance as well... LOVE.

Now what does this have to do with yoga? Do you have it? Yes, balance & perception. Yes, in this movie both of the main characters leaned very strongly in one direction, a life completely out of balance. They had their eye on the prize, and nothing else existed (perception). Though the prize may be great, can you see where it was unbalanced? Even the hard working Tiana, who had great intentions of opening a business and becoming successful, had her imbalance. What is success without Love? Prince Naveen was all about fun, and though its great to know how to have fun, and find our playful side, you wont find happiness in just fun.

Next time you have your eye on the prize, ask yourself, is this where all of my attention needs to be? Am I forgetting anything else along the way? Is it about the path that I am on or the prize at the end? Yoga teaches us that the practice is more important the goal. Which is why we dont go to our goal yoga we go to practice yoga. Enjoy!

Kris

A New Year bringing Ethics to Yoga

As all things in Yoga take what you need from it, and if it doesn't fit in your life right now, thats ok. There is no pressure on what is offered, only a generous practice of offerings.

With that said, over the next few months I will be offering a bit of information on the Yamas and Niyamas, in my classes. These are two of the 8 limbs of yoga that focus on the mental ethical practice of Yoga, the foundation of yoga thought.

As we explore these limbs in class, I will also post some of the material here, so you can have it for your own personal exploration, along with a few other tools to help you expand and learn more in the thought process of Yoga.

I hope you enjoy this new session, feel free to ask questions, and share what you are learning here or with me personally. I love hearing your journeys. If you are new to Yoga and looking to join us feel free to check out my schedule at www.yourfitguru.com/krismyers

Namaste,
Kris
